1) Welcome & Attendance a) Recognition of New Panel Members ~ Welcome to all of our new public university panel members: Alison Champion (UIUC), Anders Linner (NIU), Cheryl Lizano (SIUE), Ramin Takloo-Bighash (UIC), and Gail Yamskulna (ISU). Thank you for agreeing to serve on the panel and for joining us today!
~Former co-chair Randy McCarthy from UIUC has stepped off of the panel due to a promotion on campus, therefore a new 4-year co-chair is needed to fill this important role. Kristen Schemmerhorn from Concordia University Chicago graciously agreed to serve as the new co-chair for the spring season. IAI Leadership appreciate this and indicated she is welcome to continue past the spring semester if she is willing and able. 2) Course Review & Decision Options: a) Anything we need to discuss before looking at the submitted courses? b) Course Decision Options: Quick Accepts, Accepted, Conditional Approval, Not Enough Info, & Return Courses For Panel Review 4 New Courses 4 Resubmitted New Courses 19 Ongoing Review Courses 3 Resubmitted Ongoing Review Courses 30 Total Courses

After good discussion, the panel members agreed to make the following changes to their course approval criteria: NEW SECTION Evidence of Proctored work/Exams • It should be clear within the syllabus how proctored work is administered if in-person assessments are not utilized. Proctored work is required by the panel and therefore needs details of what percentage of the work is proctored. ~ The panel also discussed the use of alternative grading schemes and how these may or may not work with the panel’s current course approval criteria regarding the requirement for “the proportion of the final grade determined by cumulative knowledge assessment(s), such as a final exam; this should be a significant portion of the grade, that is at least 11% but preferably 15% or more”. The panel agreed to make the following change to allow for more flexibility in cases where different grading techniques may be used: OLD the proportion of the final grade determined by cumulative knowledge assessment(s), such as a final exam; this should be a significant portion of the grade, that is at least 11%, but preferably 15% or more NEW the proportion of the final grade determined by cumulative knowledge assessment(s), such as a final exam; this should be a significant portion of the grade, that is at least 11%, but preferably 15% or more. If using alternative grading schemes, the representative instructor syllabus must show how cumulative knowledge will be assessed and the impact on the final grade. ~ Lastly, the panel considered the minor wording change made by the GECC Math panel to their calculus sequence descriptor regarding coverage of surfaces. The panel agreed to change from the current “cylindrical surfaces, quadric surfaces” to new wording “surfaces including cylindrical and quadric surfaces”. MTH 901 - Calculus I Spring 2023 Math Major Panel Criteria All three of these changes will be made by Krista on the iTransfer website shortly and will be in effect for the fall ’23 season. The panel will reevaluate all three in 2024 to determine how well they are working and if they need additional changes in order to be more clear for submitting institutions. b) Outstanding / ongoing topics from previous panel meeting(s) c) Updates d) Other discussion items from panel members e) Next meeting(s): i) Fall '23 = Thursday, November 9th, 2023, at 10:00 am to 2:30 pm, via Zoom and TBD. ii) Spring '24 = TBD in Fall '23 meeting _____________________________________ Panel Approval Ratio Panel: [Major] Mathematics Panel Semester Fall 2022 _____________________________________ Ongoing Courses = 27 New Courses = 7 Total Courses = 34 _____________________________________ Approved Ratio = 38.24% Conditional Approved Ratio = 29.41% Approved & Conditional Ratio = 67.65% Non-Approved Ratio = 32.35% Total Ratio = 100.00% _____________________________________ |
