Subsequently, the 920 descriptor criteria will be revised from: 6. Perform dissection of major organs on a mammal specimen including eye, brain, heart, and kidney. to: 6. The panel requires students to actively perform dissections of both the mammalian brain and heart. Additionally, the dissection of two more mammalian organs is required, which may include, but are not limited to, the eye or kidney. All dissections must be clearly documented within the course structure. o This revision will be shared with submitters and institutional contacts via the “End of Season” updates IAI provides. · With regards to the 920C descriptor, the panel is working on what human cadaver dissections are necessary versus what can be mammalian dissections and determine if the number of dissections can be reduced down from four. Some of these questions and concerns are due to most human cadavers being pre-dissected as well as members wanting students to actively participate in dissection rather than just simply looking at and/or observing cadaver dissection. The panel may also reconsider if the dissections can be done virtually (like UIUC does for their students) and if dissection of “major organs” must include the eye, brain, heart, and kidney as currently listed in the descriptor. o Malinda will work with the panel co-chairs to create a poll for further exploration based on the discussions the panel had within the meeting. b) Outstanding / ongoing topics from previous panel meeting(s) c) Updates d) Other discussion items from panel members ~The panel discussed the kit-based labs for the GECC Life Sciences panel. Malinda explained that the GECC panel continues to discuss the science process skills requirements that feed into the expectations for kit-based labs. IAI leadership will provide an update to the panel once more information is available from the GECC panel. ~The panel also decided to start working in spring 2024 on Microbiology as a possible new descriptor or as soon as potential changes to the newer 920C descriptor have been made. e) Next meeting(s): i) Fall '23 = Friday, October 20th, 2023, at 10:00 am to 2:30 pm, via Zoom and TBD. ii) Spring '24 = TBD in Fall '23 meeting _____________________________________ Panel Approval Ratio Panel: [Major] Biology Panel Semester Fall 2022 _____________________________________ Ongoing Courses = 6 New Courses = 12 Total Courses = 18 _____________________________________ Approved Ratio = 66.67% Conditional Approved Ratio = 11.11% Approved & Conditional Ratio = 77.78% Non-Approved Ratio = 22.22% Total Ratio = 100.00% |
