1) Welcome & Attendance a) Recognition of New Panel Members: No new panel members this season 2) Zoom: Please mute yourself when not speaking, use the chat box to ask questions or easily add to the discussion, and drop a note in chat if you have to step away from the meeting for an extended period of time. 3) Course Review & Decision Options: a) Anything we need to discuss before looking at the submitted courses? No b) Course Decision Options: Quick Accepts, Accepted, Conditional Approval, Not Enough Info, & Return 4) Panel Business a) Are changes needed for any of the panel’s current descriptors and/or course approval criteria? No changes were made to the panel's existing descriptor or course approval criteria this season. b) Outstanding / ongoing topics from previous panel meeting(s) Panel continued the discussion regarding the creation of new descriptors for Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) courses and determined that if the panel agrees to launch A&P as a submission option, that a cadaver and non-cadaver version would have to be made available. This "C" designation would be indicative of a cadaver-based course much like the IAI GECC science courses with an "L" designation which indicates a lab course. Kelly, Lisa, & Kalpa will work together to take the comments and feedback received to date to revise and finalize proposed descriptors for A&P and A&P-C to share with the panel in the spring. The finalized proposed versions will be sent out to the full panel by the end of January and a special meeting will be held mid-February to review together and make a decision on how to proceed. c) Updates d) Other discussion items from panel members Lakshmi asked about the panel reconsidering if we could approve a fully online Bio course in the future as many faculty and institutions have found success with this mode during Covid. Great discussion regarding the difference between online gen ed science courses and expected outcomes for science major courses where students are expected to learn how to use modern equipment and techniques. Take-home kits are expensive and do not provide the same learning experiences that bio major students should have in order to be prepared for upper-division major courses and careers. Malinda indicated that the IAI leadership team has been discussing these issues and will likely hold a special meeting next spring with the science panel members to discuss this as a whole. Prior to holding such a meeting, it was recommended that 1) we get an understanding of what the universities expect / require for their lab courses, and 2) understand that there is likely to be differences for gen ed vs. major courses in terms of 100% online becoming accepted for an IAI science code. e) Next meeting(s): i) Spring ’22 = Friday, May 6 ii) Fall ’22 = Friday, October 28 _____________________________________ Courses For Panel Review 4 New Courses 2 Resubmitted New Courses 13 Ongoing Review Courses 4 Resubmitted Ongoing Review Courses
