Retired 12/31/2008: Overview of special education. Identification of exceptional individuals, their cognitive, physical, social and emotional characteristics and needs. Survey of all areas of special education related to services for individuals with disabilities including identification, intervention strategies, methods, and programs designed to meet their needs. Identification of exceptional individuals psychological implications for each exceptionality including but not limited to learning disabilities. Identification and utilization of legal aspects including applicable federal and state laws, structure of services, role of special education personnel, background knowledge in classroom management, remediation of same. Techniques for gathering, analyzing, utilizing assessment data to develop IEP programs for exceptional individuals. Awareness of role of general education and the exceptional individual, accommodations, modifications of academic standards. Impact of the exceptional individual on family, public school education, and transition for this individual after completion of their public school program. Awareness of concerns for the future of special education for exceptional individuals.
