Retired 12/31/2008: An introduction to the practices of plant layout and material handling in the manufacturing industry. Workflow concepts as related to work in process, material storage, material handling, environmental considerations, cell manufacturing, assembly line procedures, receiving and shipping, packaging, and safety will be explained. Other factors such as electrical power drops, handling of chips and scrap, location of tool crib, and inspection stations will be discussed. Material handling devices such as fork lift truck, cranes, carts, and pallets will be explained. The student will apply both economic and ergonomic models for manufacturing and will demonstrate the understanding of concepts by completing a simple plant layout project.
