Retired 12/31/2008: An introduction to the literary and cultural traditions of one or more U.S. minority cultures-such as Native American, African American, Asian American, and Hispanic American-and to general issues of cultural marginalization of minorities in the American experience. Students will develop a broader understanding of the culturally different experiences expressed in minority writings, as well as an awareness of the distinctive literary modes of expression and belief systems. Written work includes essay exams and formal essay assignments (totaling 9-12 pages), in addition to any reading journals, class notes, or other informal responses. All written work must meet the usual standards for college-level writing, be clearly and coherently presented and substantially free of surface errors. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the first General Education writing course is required as a prerequisite for this course to be accepted for credit toward an English major.
